Home of the Grizzlies
In parallel with the University of Montana Student Life Master Plan, UM engaged SMA Architecture and Design to study the branding and wayfinding system of the Main Campus, as well as the Missoula College Campus and South Campus of the University of Montana.
The objective of the study was to identify student, faculty/staff, and visitor wayfinding needs and design an effective signage and wayfinding system to enhance the user experience at all three campus environments.
Enhancing the UM Experience
SMA developed recommendations for the implementation of a consistent, concise branding and wayfinding system.
Recommendations consider altering existing wayfinding infrastructure as well as incorporating new wayfinding elements.
The intention of the resulting UM Wayfinding & Branding System is to communicate a consistent identity and retain the sense of place already created at UM while enhancing the overall UM experience.
Welcome!
The implementation of the study will result in a prominent UM block monument sign at the north entrance to Jennette Rankin Park, signifying one's arrival on the University of Montana campus.
Directional wayfinding will be provided with an internally lit, Gilkey Welcome Center sign to ensure campus visitors and prospective students will get a proper reception upon arriving on campus.
Building identification signs will replace the precast "tombstones" throughout campus, assisting with proper orientation and wayfinding at the University of Montana.
