Future - Forward

  • Having not had major upgrades since opening in 1957, East Middle School, Butte's only middle school, needed upgrades throughout to accommodate current and future educational needs. Working with the Butte School District, SMA studied and planned for upgrades across all K-8 schools that were funded in a successful bond in 2018.

  • Upgrades included a new, relocated secure vestibule and reception space, a new science and athletics addition, and renovations to the auditorium, cafeteria, and classroom spaces.

  • New and renovated educational spaces focused on flexibility of learning and student and staff collaboration. New shared spaces to accommodate small-group and project focused learning were integrated throughout the building. The new science wing incorporates shared lecture/lab spaces to promote flexibility in educational delivery.

Safe + Secure

  • Safety and security upgrades include a renovated reception and entry vestibule which creates one point-of-entry, and a secure building perimeter.

  • The new security system includes a fully integrated notification display, clock, bell, and paging system in each student space. All announcements and displays can be controlled at school administrative offices or the central district office.

  • The systems were designed to integrate and communicate with safety and security upgrades in Butte's six Elementary Schools.

A Whole-Building Facelift

  • The existing building received extensive upgrades throughout including new ceilings, lights, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, asbestos abatement, a new fire suppression system, and structural and ADA compliant upgrades.

  • These upgrades ensure the building's systems can serve the students and district for many years to come
