Where the Devil's Brigade Trained

  • SMA was commissioned in 2006 to create a Range Master Plan for Fort Harrison, located adjacent to Helena, Montana, that would plan for the expansion and development of their training ranges throughout the next ten to fifteen years. Several thousand acres of land make up the training and range areas of Fort Harrison.

  • Due to the sheer size of the range area, it was imperative that the design team work closely with National Guard representatives throughout the process to become familiar with their existing facilities, as well as the facilities they are anticipating in the future.

  • Some of the elements included in the Range Master Plan are areas designated for pistols, rifles, grenade training, tank training, shoot houses, landing strips, parachute landing zones, and ammunition bunkers, as well as several training obstacle courses.

  • Fort William Henry Harrison, where the original Devil's Brigade trained, continues today as a fully functioning National Guard training facility, including a host of live weapon ranges. SMA worked with the Montana National Guard to study and plan for the Fort's next fifteen years of weapons training.

  • Encompassing several thousand acres seems like a lot until you begin to plan for where the actual fired rounds could land. SMA studied all firing ranges, including, pistols, rifles, and grenade training. Working with the topography and ballistic information, SMA planned two dimensionally and three dimensionally where a potential round may hit when fired.
