On-Campus Living for Upperclassmen
In collaboration with Mithun architects, designers, and planners, SMA worked with MSU to create a four-story suite-style residence hall that was designed with upperclassmen in mind. The building consists of two, three, and four bed type suites to accommodate the variety of student housing needs at Montana State University.
At the time of its completion, Gallatin Hall was the newest residence hall in 15 years and completed the quad of the Headwaters Complex on campus. Gallatin Hall was named after the Gallatin River, one of the three main tributaries that create the Missouri River.
The building design takes advantage of views of the Bridger Mountains to the east, particularly in the sky lounge located on the fourth floor. The project emphasized sustainable building design and living and achieved LEED® Gold.
A Community Living Home Away from Home
The culture at Montana State University is driven by connection and diversity. Within it, Gallatin Hall is designed to be a flexible opportunity for students to cook, dine, and relax in small or large groups while maintaining private resident suites that include bedrooms and bathrooms.
The east end of the building is primarily glass and offers both dramatic views and a strong exterior-to-interior connection. The primarily public end of the hall is a welcoming beacon to passersby.
Learn from the Building
Many aspects of the building design express a sensible balance between many angles of sustainability - energy use, physical activity, human connection, safety, planting and more. Educational plaques and markers are strategically placed throughout to teach the importance of sustainability.
As a LEED® Gold facility, it is one of the higher performing buildings on campus and as future development on campus pushes more toward smaller environmental impact, Gallatin Hall is plug-and-play ready for a building dashboard system allowing for transparent and competitive building operation and management.
