UM Student Life

  • The University of Montana contracted with SMA and NAC Architecture to develop a Campus Master Plan focused on the student experience and interaction with the campus. The study focused on residential life, student dining, and student recreational facilities and opportunities.


  • Conducted during the COVID pandemic, the design team utilized interactive, digital meeting formats and surveying tools to gather critical information.

One-of-a-Kind Campus

  • The UM campus is located at the intersection of the Clark Fork River, Mount Sentinel, and the city center at the northeast corner of Missoula. This unique campus setting offers several recreational, civic, and entertainment opportunities to the UM student community.


  • The Master Plan focused on enhancing the traditional districts within the campus while allowing for future growth and development of student services and opportunities.

Let's Make it Happen!

  • The completion of the Student Life Master Plan led to the development and design of several immediate projects on campus including a New Dining Facility, the renovation of Knowles Hall, and campus-wide signage and wayfinding improvements.
